For a variety of reasons, the Skin
loses moisture and excessive loss of moisture leads to Dry Skin Condition. In the
general population, Dry Skin condition can occur from a variety of factors,
including Weather, Photodamage, exposure to various Chemicals, advancing Age
etc. Depending on its location and severity, Dry Skin can be unsightly,
uncomfortable and a source of embarrassment. It is also reported that about 60%
of females have recurrent or continuous Skin Dryness.
Dry Skin is a pervasive and continuing Dermatologic concern. It also occurs as a precursor and / or sequela to various chronic Skin conditions.
Moisturizers
play a key role in the management of Dry Skin condition by arresting moisture
loss as well as by restoring the moisture in the skin. They are part of
evidence-based care for certain disease conditions as well and are among the
non-prescription products most frequently recommended by Dermatologists.
Moisturisers
are one of the most widely used preparations to treat Dry Skin and are
extensively used to Hydrate and Soften the Skin.
Moisturisers work effectively in combating Dry Skin condition which may
cause Pain, Tightness, Itch, Stinging and/or Tingling.
Cosmetically, Moisturisers make the Skin smooth by the mechanism of increasing the water content in the Stratum Corneum and maintaining a normal Skin pH.
Why Moisturising is essential?
The primary
function of a Moisturiser is to Hydrate the Skin. Our Skin loses moisture daily
due to exposure to weather conditions, washing, environmental pollutants etc.
Without proper hydration, the Skin can become dry, flaky and prone to
irritation and premature aging. Moisturisers work by creating a barrier on the
skin's surface that traps moisture thus arresting the moisture loss and / or
drawing the moisture from atmosphere there by keeping the skin soft and supple.
Types of Moisturisers
- Occlusives: They
create a physical barrier on the Skin to prevent moisture loss. Examples
include Petrolatum Jelly, Beeswax and Lanolin.
- Humectants: These
ingredients draw moisture from the air into the Skin. Common Humectants include
Glycerine, Hyaluronic Acid and Urea.
- Emollients: Emollients
help to soften and smoothen the Skin by filling in the gaps between Skin
Cells. They include ingredients like Shea Butter, Jojoba Oil, Squalane etc.
Choosing the Right Moisturiser for Your Skin Type
- Dry Skin: Look
for rich, creamy Moisturisers that contain both Emollients and Occlusives.
Ingredients like Liquid Paraffins, Shea Butter, Lanolin and Ceramides are
excellent for providing Intense Hydration.
- Oily Skin: opt for
Lightweight, Non-comedogenic Moisturisers that won't clog pores. Gel-based
Moisturisers with Glycerine or Hyaluronic Acid are ideal.
- Combination Skin: Use a
balanced Moisturiser that hydrates without being too heavy. Products with
a mix of Humectants and Light Emollients work well.
- Sensitive
Skin: Choose Hypoallergenic Moisturisers with soothing ingredients like Aloe
Vera, Chamomile and Oat Extract.
For maximum effectiveness,
apply Moisturiser immediately after cleansing and toning, while the Skin is
still damp. This helps to lock in Moisture. Use gentle, upward strokes to apply
the product, being careful not to tug at the Skin. For daytime use, consider a Moisturiser
with added SPF to protect against Sun damage.

Moisturisers are a crucial part of maintaining Healthy, Hydrated Skin.
